Constructing Your SFG
Basic Model SFG:
The basic construction model for your SFG is simplicity itself, and involves making a four-
sided frame, mainly from timber, and open top and bottom. However that is just the start of
thestory-astheysay,anddifferentadaptationsonthisthemecanbeuseddependingoncir-
cumstances such as whether or not you want a portable SFG; or indeed what types of plants
you wish to grow.
The construction materials themselves, apart from timber, can also include bricks, cinder
blocks, straw bales, or just about anything that you can make a barrier with to hold in the
compost. With that in mind here are a couple of examples of the timber materials that you
will need according to the model you choose.
Traditional SFG:
To construct a basic SFG, you will need the following (untreated) timber materials; Cedar
or Oak is best, however redwood will still last for approx 10 years or so. It is best to use
untreated timber to prevent contaminants from the treatment leaching into your composting
material - and from there to the plants themselves.
