OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
TRERIKSRÖSET - WHERE THREE LANDS MEET
Treriksröset , the spot marking the meeting point of Sweden, Norway and Finland, lies
100km northwest of Karesuando.
If driving, cross the bridge from Karesuando to the Finnish Kaaresuvanto, and then take
the E8 route northwest to Kilpisjärvi (110km). Alternatively, walk across the bridge and
take the daily bus departing Kaaresuvanto (1¾ hours, one daily at 2.35pm, plus another
one at 4.25pm from June to mid-September) and then hike the 11km woodland trail from
the northern side of the village to the small Goldjärvi lake , where a yellow concrete 'bell'
marks the spot.
To shorten your hike to just 3km each way, hop aboard the M/S Malla ( 358-400 66 93
92), which - if it has at least four passengers - sails from Kilpisjärvi to Koltaluokta, an old
Sami residence (45 minutes, €28 return, 10am, 2pm, 6pm Finnish time late June to early
August). The boat waits at Koltaluokta for two hours.
Check up-to-date bus timetables at www.matkahuolto.fi and don't forget that Finland is
one hour ahead of Sweden!
Abisko
0980
Easy access to spectacular scenery makes Abisko (Ábeskovvu in Sami) one of the high-
lights of any trip to Lappland. The 75-sq-km Abisko National Park spreads out from the
southern shore of scenic lake Torneträsk. It's framed by the striking profile of Lapporten, a
'gate' formed by neighbouring hills that serves as the legendary gate to Lappland. This is
also the driest part of Sweden and consequently has a relatively long hiking season.
Abisko has two train stops - Östra station puts you in the centre of the tiny, tiny village,
while Abisko Turiststation is across the highway from the STF lodge.
