To reach the northern end of the trail, take bus 93 from Gällivare to Ritsem (Skr198, 3¼
hours, one daily mid-June to mid- September) and connect with the STF ferry (once or
twice daily, late June to mid-September) to Vaisaluokta and Änonjálmme, 1.5km north of
the Áhkká STF hut. For details of boats from the end of the Padjelantaleden to Kvikkjokk
(one to three daily, late June to mid-September), check with Båttraffik i Kvikkjokk (

Fiskflyg ( 072-512 77 70; www.fiskflyg.se ) has daily helicopter flights (late June to late
August) departing Kvikkjokk (12.45pm) for the Padjelanta trail, stopping at the Njunjes,
Tarrekaise and Sommarlappa STF mountain huts. It also runs a twice-daily Ritsem-to-
Staloluokta taxi flight (Skr1100), departing Ritsem at 7.30am and 3pm and Staloluokta at
8am and 3.30pm.
Kvikkjokk
Tiny Kvikkjokk (Huhttán in Sami), around 100km west of Jokkmokk, is on the
Kungsleden and the Padjelantaleden trails, and is an ideal jumping-off point for Sarek Na-
tional Park.
Several fantastic day walks start from the village, including climbs to the mountain Sn-
jerak (809m; three hours return) and a steeper ascent of Prinskullen (749m; three hours re-
turn). Follow signs to a car park at the top of the hill to find the trail; if you instead contin-
ue straight ahead until the road ends, you'll find another car park and the STF Kvikkjokk
Fjällstation ( 0971-210 22; www.svenskaturistforeningen.se/kvikkjokk ; dm/s/d Skr295/610/815;
mid-Feb-May & mid-Jun-Oct) , a picturesque mountain station on the banks of a roaring
river with a restaurant serving Swedish standards, as well as fully equipped guest kitchens.

Sarek & Stora Sjöfallet National Parks
Experienced and well-kitted trekkers meet their match in Sarek National Park . Named
after Sarektjåhkkå (2098m), and full of sharp peaks and huge glaciers, the park is rich in
wildlife such as bears, wolverines and lynxes. The most challenging section of the
