In-Depth Information
Overlooking picturesque Talvatis lake, Jokkmokk's nicest hotel has thoroughly modern, if
unmemorable rooms, a superb tiled sauna in the basement and another by the lake (for that
refreshing hole-in-the-ice dip in winter). The large restaurant, shaped like a Sami kåta
(hut), appropriately serves the likes of elk fillet and smoked reindeer with juniper-berry
sauce.
Hotell Gästis HOTEL
( 0971-100 12; www.hotell-gastis.com ; Herrevägen 1; s/d/tr from Skr950/1195/1300; )
Pleasant central hotel. Meals are served in the attached restaurant shaped like a Sami kåta .
Ájtte Museum Restaurant SWEDISH
( www.restaurangattje.se ; Kyrkogatan 3; mains Skr95-140; noon-4pm)
This Sami restaurant makes it possible to enhance what you've learned about the local
wildlife by sampling some of it - from suovas (smoked and salted reindeer meat) to
reindeer steak and grouse with local berries. The weekday lunchtime buffet (Skr90) serves
home-style Swedish dishes.
Yoik evenings and Sami storytelling events take place here occasionally.
Café Glasskas
CAFE
(Porjusvägen 7; mains Skr165-295; 4-10pm Mon-Fri)
This friendly coffee shop turned gourmet spot delights resident and visiting palates with a
succinct menu of local game and fish (think elk burger, grilled Arctic char and reindeer
steak with all the trimmings).
Thai Muang Isaan THAI
(Porjusvägen 4; mains Skr120-140; 11am-8pm Mon-Fri, noon-8pm Sat; )
Central, authentic Thai place fills the spice gap in the local dining scene with noodle, rice
and stir-fry dishes, but it's the curries that really hit the spot.
