To experience the life of the Forest Sami, visit Båtsuoj, where Tom and Lotta Svensson
practise their traditional livelihood full-time. You can watch the reindeer get lassoed,or
stay overnight on reindeer skins inside a kåta(typical Forest Sámi log hut), learn about
Sami shamanic practices, eat grilled reindeer and sip coffee cooked over a wood fire.

The Sami camp is near the village of Gasa, 17km north of the village of Slagnäs, on E45.

Eighty-five kilometres northwest of Arvidsjaur, the one-street Sami town of Arejplog (Ár-
jepluovve, in Sami) sits on the Silvervägen (Silver Rd; E95) surrounded by prime fishing
country of 8700 lakes (each local has their favourite).
Arjeplog's star attraction is its excellent Silvermuseet (Silver Museum;
www.silvermuseet.se ; Torget; adult/child Skr80/free; 10am-noon & 1-6pm Mon-Fri, 10am-2pm
Sat) . Housed in what used to be a nomad school, the tour de force here is the vast collec-
tion of Sami silver objects - the most extensive of its kind - including belt buckles, ornate
spoons and goblets, and collars that would traditionally have been passed down from
mother to daughter. You may also spot a dássko , a special bag for a silver spoon, favoured
by the Southern Sami; shaman drums; and 2000-year-old skis used by Sami hunters. Other
displays trace the history of the town and its main industries - silver mining and logging,
