Sorsele & Ammarnäs
0952 / Pop 1277
Railway enthusiasts should pull up at Sorsele for the Inlandsbanemuseet (Stationsgatan
19; adult/child Skr30/free; 9am-6pm Mon-Fri, 10am-5pm Sat & Sun) , inside the train-station
building, that covers the history of the railway. Though supposedly neutral, Sweden al-
lowed Nazi troops to transfer supplies to different parts of occupied Norway using the In-
landsbanan line during WWII. The adjoining tourist office (
0952-140 90; www.sorsele.se ;
Stationsgatan 19;
9am-6pm Mon-Fri, 10am-5pm Sat & Sun) can arrange fishing permits and
fly-fishing trips.
Sorsele River Hotel ( 0952-121 50; www.sorseleriverhotel.se ; Hotellgatan 2; s/d Skr995/
1295; ) is a swish affair of cream shades and quality bed linens. More importantly for
travellers just passing through, it also offers a superb weekday lunch buffet (Skr85) and
dinner buffet (Skr140) with dish-of-the-day star; palt (blood pancake) is our favourite.
From Sorsele, Rte 363 leads to tiny Ammarnäs, nestling in a river valley hemmed in by
the Ammarfjället mountains and used by Sami herders for centuries. Even now, a third of
the population makes their living from reindeer husbandry. Hikers can tackle the wildest
part of the Kungsleden ( Click here ) from here or else embark on easier day hikes, such as
the 8km jaunt to the top of Mt Kaissats (984m) that runs from Stora Tjulträsk at the west-
ern end of the village.
The only accommodation in the village is Ammarnäsgården ( 0952-600 03;
www.ammarnasgarden.se ; Tjulträskvägen 1 ; hostel s/d Skr250/440, hotel s/d Skr595/795;
) , a
modern hotel with adjoining youth hostel in a superbly picturesque location. There is a
sauna and pool in the basement, and the hotel's restaurant (open June to October) serves
reindeer stew, fish from nearby rivers and elk burgers alongside international dishes.
The tourist office ( 0952-600 00; www.ammarnas.nu ; Ammarnäsgården; 9am-5pm mid-
Jun-mid-Sep) on the main road can help organise Icelandic-pony rides in summer and
dogsledding and snowmobiling in winter.
Sorsele is served daily by bus 45 along the Gällivare-Östersund route, while bus 341
runs from Sorsele to Ammarnäs (Skr115, 1¼-1¾ hours, one to three daily).
