Atoklimpen
MOUNTAIN
Atoklimpen (1006m), a monolithic, bare mountain 35km west of Tärnaby, has been re-
garded as holy by the Sami for centuries. Evidence dating back to the 15th century of sac-
rificial sites and encampments with hearths is scattered across the area; a 3km trail leads
up to the top.
Near the car park (off Rd 1116) is a peat hut and a small cottage, built by a Sami couple
in the early 1920s, a time when the government forbade the Sami to build permanent struc-
tures; the ensuing debate over the cottage helped to change the law in 1928.
Laxfjället
HIKING
Hike up Laxfjället (820m) for perspective-shifting views of the surrounding lakes and
mountains. There are four trails, the steepest and most direct being the 2km trail that runs
from Tärnaby Fjällby underneath the ski lift (two to three hours return). At the top, pose
for a pic under the precariously balanced Laxfjäll Stone that looks poised to squish you.
Laisaleden Trail
HIKING
This spectacular yet not too demanding 9km trail (four to six hours) starts out along
Drottningsleden (Queen's Trail) and takes in splendid views of Norwegian peaks before
descending to Naturum in Hemavan. Follow signs to a turn-off 15km north of the Tärnaby
tourist office along the main road. You can hike in reverse from Hemavan for more of an
uphill challenge.
Hemavan Bike Park MOUNTAIN BIKING
( 0954-305 00; www.bikepark.nu ; day pass adult/child Skr210/170; 10am-5pm daily Jul-Sep)
In warm weather, Hemavan's ski slopes morph into an extreme playground for mountain
bikers. The network of trails varies in difficulty, ranging from green (beginners' slope) to
black (a rugged, steep, bumpy descent; for pros), and is spread over five slopes. A chairlift
2km north of central Hemavan is adapted to carry bikes to the top of the mountain.
