Storuman
0951 / Pop 2207
Though it sounds like a villain from Lord of the Rings , Storuman is more about harnessing
hydroelectric power than spreading darkness over the Shire. This one-street town sits
along the 2000km-long Blåvägen (Blue Highway; www.blavagen.nu ) that runs to Norway's
Atlantic coast. Storuman's distinguishing features include the old railway hotel building
with a wonderfully ornate wooden interior.
The en-suite hotel rooms and cheaper, more basic hostel rooms of the cheerful yellow
Hotell Luspen ( 0951-333 80; www.hotelluspen.se ; Järnvägsgatan 13; hostel s/d Skr380/480,
hotel s/d Skr750/850) by the train station are a good place to break your journey along the
E45; breakfast (Skr50) is available to guests. The best place to eat in town is Toppen (
0951-777 00; www.hotelltoppen.se ; Blåvägen 238; mains Skr145-235; 11am-7.30pm Mon-Fri, to
6.30pm Sat, to 5.30pm Sun) , with an appropriately game-heavy a la carte menu and a bargain
weekday lunch buffet.
Bus 45 runs daily on the Gälli-
vare-Jokkmokk-Arvidsjaur-Sorsele-Storuman-Östersund route. Buses also run west to
Tärnaby (Skr169, 1¾ hours, five daily) and east to Umeå (Skr265, 3½ hours, three daily),
while the twice-weekly Lapplandspilen ( 0940-150 40; www.lapplandspilen.se ) buses ply
the route from Hemavan to Stockholm via Storuman (Skr680, 11¾ hours) on Thursday
and Sunday. In summer, Inlandsbanan trains stop here.
Tärnaby & Hemavan
0954 / Pop 704
Tärnaby, an elongated one-street village that sits on the shores of Gäutan lake, is the birth-
place of double Olympic gold-medallist skier Ingemar Stenmark. Hemavan, its smaller
counterpart 18km north, is the southern entry point to the 500km Kungsleden trail that
passes through the Vindelfjällens Nature Reserve, and both are popular bases for fresh-air
fiends. From excellent hiking and skiing to checking out holy mountains, descending steep
slopes on mountain bikes in a shower of mud and scree and sedate pedalling around lakes
- it just depends on your interests, and the moods of the weather gods.
