WORTH A TRIP
KUSTVÄGEN
If you're driving between Hudiksvall and Sundsvall, the 75km-long Kustvägen
( www.kustvagen.se ) (Coastal Road) is a much lovelier alternative to the parallel stretch of
the E4. Narrow, winding and largely unpeopled, Kustvägen meanders through forest and
past secluded beaches and tiny working fishing communities.
If coming from Hudiksvall, join the Coastal Road at Jättendal and follow its sinuous
curves to the Sörfjärden turnoff. From the northern end of the beach, a gorgeous walking
path skirts the forested peninsula. Further north, a tiny road branches off east to Oxsand ,
a village with appealing bathing spots. Another turnoff further along takes you to Galt-
ströms Bruk , where there's a miniature railway for children and the small but lovely Vit-
sand Beach , just a stroll through the forest, with flat slabs of waterside rock perfect for
sunbathing.
Further north still, Skåtan is a picture-perfect village with a small yacht marina, and
Skatans Cafe & Krog ( www.skatanscafe.se ; mains from Skr125; 11am-9pm Jun-late Aug) that
serves mostly fishy delights; there are ship-shape rooms upstairs in sailor stripes should
you wish to linger. At the northern end of the Kustvägen there's a T-junction; the eastern
branch leads you to Lörruden, while the western one takes you back to the E4 via Njur-
undabommen. Lörruden's eponymous restaurant ( 060-370 98; www.sillmans.se ; mains Skr
165-275) sits amidst red fishing cottages right by the water and has a devoted following of
Sundsvall customers due to the chefs' passion for locally sourced ingredients. Dishes
such as the hearty fish stew and seafood lasagne really stand out and the perch with
chanterelles and truffle puree was out of this world.

STF Sundsvall City HOSTEL
( GOOGLE MAP ; 060-12 60 90; www.sundsvallcityhostel.se ; Sjögatan 11; hostel s/d/tr/q Skr400/
500/720/920, hotel s/d Skr500/595; )
Friendly but rather anonymous hostel in a super-central location. All the rooms are
sparsely furnished but bright and en suite; guests have use of the sauna and fully equipped
kitchen; and reception is open all day - a miracle in the budget lodging category. 'Hotel'
rooms are essentially hostel rooms but with bed linen and breakfast included.
