Kulturmagasinet MUSEUM
( GOOGLE MAP ; www.sunsvall.se/kulturmagasinet ; Sjögatan;
10am-7pm Mon-Thu, to 6pm Fri,
11am-4pm Sat & Sun)
Down near the harbour, Kulturmagasinet is a magnificent restoration of some old ware-
houses and now contains the town library and Sundsvall Museum , which has engaging
exhibits of the history of Sundsvall, plus natural history and geology. There's a permanent
art exhibition upstairs featuring 20th-century Swedish artists, and the superb temporary ex-
hibitions have recently included some rather risque photography featuring aged, beautiful
burlesque dancers.
Norra Berget HILL
Norra Berget hill (150m) is crowned with a 19th-century viewing tower , from which you
get sweeping views of the city, squeezed between the sea and surrounding hills. Nearby,
you can also learn to bake tunnbröd (soft, thin unleavened bread) at the Norra Bergets
Hantverksmuseum , an entertaining collection of wooden buildings that make up the
open-air museum (open 11am to 5pm, admission Skr25). In July you'll also find yourself
knee-deep in blueberries. To get here, take any Norra Berget-bound bus.
Alnö Gamla Kyrka
CHURCH
( GOOGLE MAP ; noon-6pm mid-Jun-mid-Aug)
This magnificent church, a mixture of 12th- and 15th-century styles, sits 2km north of the
bridge (at Vi) on Alnö island, just east of Sundsvall. The upper wall and ceiling paintings,
likely done by one of Albertus Pictor's pupils, have survived intact. Even better is the
late-11th-century carved wooden font across the road; the upper part combines Christian
and Viking symbolism, while the lower part shows beasts that embody evil. Catch bus 1 to
Vi (two hourly), then walk.
