Beautifully situated in a mountain valley by the shores of Åresjön lake, Åre is Sweden's
most popular skiing resort : 30,000 people invade the village during the December-to-May
skiing season. In July Åre hosts the Åre Bike Festival ( www.arebikefestival.com ) and the
hardcore Åre Extreme Challenge ( www.areextremechallenge.se ) that has its competitors
running, paddling and biking for the grand prize. Besides traditional sports, winter and
summer bring a bewildering array of mountain-related activities that you can try your hand
at.

Kabinbanan CABLE CAR, VIEWPOINT

Taking you almost to the top of Mt Åreskutan, the only gondola in Scandinavia is worth
taking for the awesome views alone. The seven-minute ride departs from behind Åre's
main square and whisks you up to a viewing platform (1274m) complete with Åre's most
expensive cafe.

In summer the slopes of Mt Åreskutan become an enormous playground dedicated to
downhill biking. More than 30 trails span 40km of track, ranging from beginner to extreme
(the trails are graded using the same system as ski slopes). The Kabinbanan cable car, the
Bergbanan funicular, and the VM6:an and Hummelliften chairlifts are fitted with bike
racks.
