The town of Klintehamn has a good range of services. From the town's harbour, you can
catch a passenger-only boat to the island nature reserve Stora Karlsö ( www.storakarlso.se )
one to three times daily from May to early September (adult/six to 15 years return Skr345/
155, 30 minutes). Remote as it is, the island is home to extensive bird life, including thou-
sands of guillemots and razorbills, as well as the maculinea arion (large blue butterfly),
and is well worth the time it takes to get there. You can visit the island as a day trip (with
3½ hours ashore) or stay overnight.
STF Stora Karlsö ( 0498-24 04 50; www.storakarlso.se ; hostel r Skr500, beach-house d
Skr845; May-Aug) , Stora Karlsö's simple STF hostel, is a really special choice if you want
to get away from it all. Visitors can opt to stay in a beach house near the old lighthouse.
There's a nature exhibit and museum where you can learn about ongoing research projects
on the island, plus a restaurant and cafe. The owners regularly organise birdwatching trips
and wild-orchid walks. Book ahead.
In Klintehamn and under new ownership since 2014, enticing Warfsholm ( 0498-24
00 10; www.warfsholm.se ; sites Skr100, s/d from Skr490/690; hotel May-Sep, apt/cottages year
round; ) has several accommodation options, plus a beautiful waterside location,
a pleasant restaurant and a cosy bar. There are rooms in the atmospheric 19th-century main
house, as well as apartments and cottages in the grounds. The former hostel is now only
rented out to groups. Alternatively, for the ultimate in pampering, check out one of Got-
land's latest top luxury sleeps, also in Klintehamn: Djupvik Hotel (

) .
