Sights & Activities
The town, with its 13th-century wall of 40 towers, is a noble sight - savour it for a few
hours while walking around the perimeter (3.5km). Also take time to stroll around the
Botanic Gardens and the narrow roads and scandalously cute lanes just south of here. Pick
up a map and the Welcome to World Heritage Visby booklet to help guide you around the
town.
The tourist office organises free two-hour tours at 11am daily from June to the end of
August from outside the tourist office. No reservations are necessary.
Medieval Churches
CHURCH
Founded by Franciscans in 1233, St Karins Kyrka ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; Stora Torget) is
one of the most stunning of Visby's medieval churches, with a beautiful Gothic interior.
Other ruins include the magnificant St Nicolai Kyrka ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ) , built in 1230
by Dominican monks. The Helge And Kyrka ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ) ruin is the only
stone-built octagonal church in Sweden. It was built in 1200, possibly by the Bishop of
Riga; the roof collapsed after a fire in 1611.
