This dreamy castle sits between two lakes 15km northeast of Kristianstad. Built as a mon-
astery in the mid-13th century, it's a stunning spot, with different tiers of accommodation
available in various wings and cottages in the grounds. Plus there is a well-priced restaur-
ant. Bus 558 (Skr25, 20 minutes) from Kristianstad bus station to Arkelstorp stops near the
castle.

A rustic beam here, a 17th-century wall there: this hotel has a pleasing sense of pervading
history. Opposite the cathedral, its pale-toned rooms are a bit dull, but the amenities are
good and include a sauna.

With parquet floors and stucco ceilings, Hotel Christian IV is certainly grand, if a little
worn around the edges. The beautiful turn-of-the-century building was once a bank; one of
the vaults is still a place of value: it's home to a vast wine cellar.
