On the site of the old customs house, the Continental is reputedly Sweden's oldest hotel,
dating from 1829. It's loaded with old-world charm (think grand chandeliered foyer and
marble staircase), but its rooms are more business-style with light wood furnishings, par-
quet floors and smart, if small, slate-grey-and-cream bathrooms.
Eating & Drinking
Most budget eating places are on Stora Östergatan, the main pedestrian street.

Plunge into that Henning Mankell novel at this fabulous cafe - serving light meals like
filled baked potatoes, focaccias and piled-high salads - then pluck a book from one of the
shelves and plan to stay awhile. In summer the 18th-century cobbled courtyard is a delight,
especially when there's live music.

Short on space but long on choice, the baguettes and wraps here are made with only the
freshest locally sourced produce. Even if you're not peckish, grab a coffee; it's reputed to
be the best in town.
