Fästningens Vandrarhem HOSTEL
( 0340-868 28; www.fastningensvandrarhem.se ; Varbergs fästning; s/d/tr/q from Skr300/600/
1100/1440)
Within Varberg Fortress, this SVIF hostel can lock you up inside its gnarly single and
double prison cells. If that's too 'authentic' an experience, opt for one of the large, bright
rooms in surrounding buildings. Miracle of miracles: linen is included and so is breakfast
(in high season).
Getteröns Camping
CAMPGROUND
(
0340-168 85; www.getteronscamping.se ; sites/cabins from Skr280/490;
May-mid-Sep;
)
On a sandy beach on the Getterön peninsula, tent spaces sit cheek by jowl with caravan
spots and rows of self-contained summer cabins. It does get busy during high season,
when most cabins are available only on a weekly basis (from Skr2450).
Hotell Gästis
HOTEL
( 0340-180 50; www.hotellgastis.nu ; Borgmästaregatan 1; s/d Skr1495/1750; )
This one-of-a-kind hotel is bursting with quirky details that include an elevator shaft
covered in pulp-fiction covers and the basement Lenin Baths (open to nonguests) - a bath-
house that's a replica of the 19th-century St Petersburg version inside a former girls' board-
ing school, featuring hot and cold pools, a massage area and an anachronistic giant
candlelit jacuzzi.
Cosy rooms come with shelves full of books and a dinner buffet is included.
Värdshuset i Varberg SWEDISH
( www.varbergsvardshus.com ; Kungsgatan 14; mains Skr149-215; 11.30am-10.30pm; )
The speciality at this appealing central restaurant is the 'plank': a sizzling platter of fish or
grilled meat, surrounded by ringlets of mashed and baked potato. Salads, banana splits and
a terrace for people-watching are among its other lures.
