Besides the modest permanent collection of works by the Halmstad Group ( Click here ) ,
Halmstads Konstmuseum hosts some impressive temporary exhibitions. Recent ones have
included Africa Is a Great Country by acclaimed photographer Jens Assur.
Medieval Attractions
HISTORIC SITES
Christian IV built Halmstad Slott ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ) and the town walls. The latter
were demolished in the 18th century, although fragments like north gate Norre Port (
MAP GOOGLE MAP ) remain at the northern end of Storgatan. Other medieval attractions
include the lovely 14th-century church St Nikolai Kyrka ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; Kyrkogatan
4; 8.30am-6pm Jun-Aug, to 3pm Sep-May) , and the half-timbered Tre Hjärtan ( MAP
GOOGLE MAP ) building on Stora Torg.
Halmstad's Sculptures
SCULPTURE
In Stora Torg, the main square, stands Carl Milles' sculptural fountain Europa and the
Bull ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ) , with the characteristically buff mermen with somewhat scary
faces. Picasso's Woman's Head ( MAP
GOOGLE MAP ) is down by the river, in Picas-
soparken off Strandgatan.
Mjellby Konstmuseum

The main focus of Mjellby Konstmuseum, 5km from town, is a changing exhibition of
works by the Halmstad Group - six local artists who pushed the boundaries with French
Cubism in the 1920s and Surrealism in the 1930s, influenced by Magritte and Dali. Not
only were their pieces controversial at the time, but these six artists collaborated with each
other on various projects.
