In-Depth Information
HALLAND
Sea, sun and surf are the name of the game in Halland, with the populations of the most
desirable beach destinations often tripling during the summer months. The long white-sand
beaches at Tylösand and Varberg are ideal for lounging, swimming and all manner of wa-
ter sports. Firmly on dry land, there are museums and an imposing fortress to explore.
Halmstad
035 / Pop 58,577
Danish until 1645, Halmstad served as an important fortified border town. Its street plan
was laid out by the Danish king Christian IV after a huge fire wiped out most of the build-
ings in 1619 (apart from a few merchants' houses along Storgatan). He also awarded
Halmstad its coat of arms: you'll see the three crowns and three hearts motif dotted all
over the place.
While in-town attractions are a bit ho-hum, the town's proximity to some of southern
Sweden's best beaches and the many places to eat, drink and be merry make Halmstad a
good place to linger in summer.
