In-Depth Information
Looking like a Tommy Hilfiger ad, this former spa town and island is a Swedish royal fa-
vourite. Boasting the country's most popular gästhamn (guest harbour), it's the weekend
destination for yachting types.
Looming over the town is doughty Carlstens Fästning ( www.carlsten.se ; adult/7-15yr
Skr80/40; 11am-6pm late Jun-late Jul, to 4pm rest of Jun & Aug) , a fortress constructed in the
1660s after the Swedish takeover of Bohuslän; later building work was completed by con-
victs sentenced to hard labour. There are smashing archipelago views from the top of its
round tower; you can also explore the secret tunnel and in the prison cells learn the story
of Lasse Maja, a cross-dressing thief and local Robin Hood figure.
The most reasonably priced place to stay is Marstrands Varmbadhus Båtellet (
0303-600 10; www.xn--btellet-exa.se ; Kungsplan; dm/d Skr300/750; ) , a private hostel with
associated pool and sauna. Turn right after disembarking from the ferry and follow the wa-
terfront for 400m.
Located at the northern end of the harbour, the renovated yet overpriced Hotell Nautic (
0303-610 30; www.nautichotell.se ; Långgatan 6; d/f Skr1600/1800;
) has bright, simple
rooms; a couple have balconies with great sea views.
Marstrand's numerous eating options include century-old local institution Bergs Kond-
itori ( www.bergskonditori.com ; Hamngatan 9; sandwiches from Skr69; 7am-5pm May-Aug) , a
dockside bakery selling fresh bread, cakes, quiches and sandwiches, while Johan the chef
tantalises with the likes of king crab paired with pickled carrot and entrecôte with roasted
beef marrow and port reduction at Johan's Krog ( 0303-612 12;
www.johanskrogmarstrand.se ; Kungsgatan 12; mains Skr265-345;
6.30pm-late) , the best of
Marstrand's fine-dining options.
The tourist office (
0303-600 87; www.marstrand.se ; Hamngatan 33;
10am-6pm Mon-Fri,
11am-5pm Sat & Sun ) is opposite the ferry terminal.
From Göteborg, take the Marstrands Expressen ( www.vasttraffik.se ) directly to
Marstrand passenger-only ferry terminal (50 minutes). The ferry crosses over to the island
every 15 minutes (Skr25).
BOHUSLÄN
Dramatic, stark and irrepressibly beautiful, the Bohuslän Coast is one of Sweden's natural
treasures. The landscape here is a grand mix of craggy islands and rickety fishing villages
