AROUND GÖTEBORG
GETTING OUT TO THE ARCHIPELAGO
Take tram 11 or 9 (summer only) from central Göteborg to Saltholmen, from where an ex-
cellent 16-destination passenger-only ferry network ( www.styrsobolaget.se ) runs round the
islands (with the exception of Marstrand). The Göteborg Pass is valid, or you can buy a
ticket (one way Skr25 per adult) to the island of your choice. Bicycles are allowed on the
ferries free of charge if there is space, but they're not allowed on city trams.
Boats run frequently to Asperö (nine minutes), Brännö (20 minutes) and Styrsö (30
minutes) from around 5.30am to 1am (less frequently at weekends); services to the other
islands are more limited. Departures are most frequent between mid-June and mid-
August.
Southern Archipelago
031 / Pop 4400
A car-free paradise, the southern archipelago is a short hop from Göteborg's hustle. Des-
pite the summer crowds, you'll always find a quiet bathing spot or serene pocket of green.
There are nine major islands and numerous smaller ones. The largest island, Styrsö, is
less than 3km long, while Brännö is the most popular for overnight stays.
The best information about the islands can be found in the English-language booklet Ex-
cursions in the Southern Archipelago, published by Västtrafik and available from the tour-
ist offices or Västtrafik information booths.
