In a striking building by London-based architects Cécile Brisac and Edgar Gonzalez, the
Varldskulturmuseet sees ethnography, art and global politics collide in immersive multime-
dia exhibitions. Recent ones have included up-to-the-minute photography of Africa's cities
and a special exhibition devoted to the Dark Continent's art.
Nya Älvsborgs Fästning CASTLE

At the mouth of the Göta älv, squat red Elfsborgs Fortress was built in the 17th century to
keep out the marauding Danes and saw action again in the early 18th century during the
Great Nordic War. Tours take in the church built for Karl XII's troops, the dungeons that
discouraged escape by swimming and the original tower.
Strömma runs boat trips and guided tours three to four times daily from May to mid-
August from Lilla Bommen harbour.

Pay homage to one of Sweden's enduring icons at the Volvo Museum, which contains
everything from the company's debut vehicle to its most experimental designs - including
the first jet engine used by the Swedish Air Force.
The museum is about 8km west of the city centre at Arendal. Fittingly, it's tricky to get
to without a car. Take tram 5 or 10 to Eketrägatan, then bus 32 to Arendal Skans.
