In-Depth Information
After the outbreak of WWI, military authorities decided that the Vaxholm fortress just
didn't cut it, so construction of a new fort began on Kyrkogårdsön in 1916. Dubbed Siarö-
fortet, it's now a fascinating museum ( www.blidosundsbolaget.se/siarofortet/ ; adult/child
Skr50/30; 10.30am-2pm Mon-Fri, to 5pm Sat & Sun May-Aug) , where you can check out the
officers' mess, kitchen, sleeping quarters and tunnels, plus two impressive 15.2cm can-
nons (they're trained on passing Viking Line ferries!). Fixed opening times vary by de-
mand and season but are roughly 10am to 2pm; guided tours are available (Skr15 extra)
through the STF hostel at 1pm Monday to Thursday, 12.30pm Friday and Saturday, and
3.30pm Sunday.
STF Vandrarhem Siaröfortet ( 08-24 30 90; kontoret@blidosundsbolaget.se ; dm/s/d
from Skr200/395/520; late Apr-mid-Oct) is an excellent hostel in the old soldiers' barracks.
Canoe hire and breakfast are available; advance booking is recommended.
Blidösundsbolaget ( 08-24 30 90; www.blidosundsbolaget.se ) ferries to Siaröfortet de-
part from Strömkajen in Stockholm and sail to Siaröfortet via Vaxholm around three times
daily in the peak summer season (mid-June to mid-August), with greatly reduced services
the rest of the year. The journey takes one hour and 45 minutes from Stockholm (Skr100)
and 50 minutes from Vaxholm (Skr50). The island is also a stop on the Waxholmsbolaget
route toward Finnhamn.
