Arguably Stockholm's best-loved cafe, hole-in-the-wall Chokladkoppen sits slap bang on
the old town's enchanting main square. It's a gay-friendly spot, with cute waiters, a look-
at-me summer terrace and yummy grub such as broccoli-and-blue-cheese pie and scrump-
tious cakes.

If you make no other snack stops in Gamla Stan, at least make it to this ice-cream shop.
It's the one place in town that reliably offers such outlandishly Swedish flavours as lakrits
(black licorice), hjörtron (cloudberry), and the ambrosia that is saffron-and-honey ice
cream.

Dating from 1785, this is Stockholm's oldest bakery-cafe, complete with chintzy chandeli-
ers, regal oil paintings and a copper samovar full of self-serve coffee. Mix and match with
gleaming pastries and a soothing selection of bagels, ciabattas and quiches.

Herbivores love Hermitage for its simple, tasty, vegetarian buffet, easily one of the best
restaurant bargains in Gamla Stan. Salad, homemade bread, tea and coffee are included in
the price. Pro tip: don't miss the drawers of hot food hiding under the main buffet tabletop.
