Birger Jarl Hotel

One of Stockholm's original design hotels, the Birger Jarl has recently had a full renova-
tion and update of the lobby, plus about 30 new rooms and suites. Standard rooms are all
done up in ultramodern Swedish style, but each of the superior rooms is put together by a
different Swedish designer, and they're well worth the price upgrade.
Students of vintage interior design should book the Retro Room, which was 'forgotten'
during a major renovation and hence has been preserved in all its 1974 glory. (You can re-
quest it through the website.) The hotel also offers budget 'cabin' rooms, tiny and window-
less but well designed, comfortable and equipped with all the mod cons. There's a sauna, a
top-floor gym and a chic lobby bar with some outdoor seating.
Nordic Light Hotel

Extremely convenient to Central Station, the Nordic Light is a minimalist Scandi design
hotel, with modern, well-equipped rooms. The signature 'mood rooms' ditch conventional
artwork for custom-designed light exhibits, which guests can adjust to suit their mood. Ad-
ditional perks include mini gym, sauna and chic lobby bar, plus a new restaurant with
fancy cocktails and DJs most nights.
Rex Hotel

While a little less luxe than its sibling Hotel Hellsten across the street, Rex has small but
stylish rooms with flat-screen TVs, rich colour schemes and Greek-stone bathrooms.
Ultra-budget rooms on a lower level are recommended only if you don't plan to spend
much time there - they are
very
tiny and windowless. Breakfast is in the lovely, exposed-
brick atrium.
