Figure 11.5 Explosion frame-by-frame animation
This provides visual feedback to players when they successfully destroy an asteroid, but
what happens if an asteroid hits the ship? To provide visual feedback for this, another
movie clip was created and placed on the shields layer in the Timeline. Go to the
Library and double-click on MC_shields in the Movieclips folder.
The first frame of this movie clip was intentionally left blank. When an asteroid gets too
close to the screen, the movie clip will play the animation. It consists of a flashing red
graphic and the word SHIELDS (Figure 11.6). The red graphic's transparency is set to
50%. This allows the user to see the game playing underneath.

The text at the top of frame 3 is a mixture of static and dynamic text. Dynamic text is
used to keep track of the time left in the game and the player's lives and score. The
last two frames of the Flash file provide feedback to the player at the end of the game.
Frame 4 is displayed when the player shoots 30 or more asteroids in 30 seconds. Frame
5 is displayed when the player loses all lives or time runs out (Figure 11.7).
