Step 9: Adjust the brightness
Select the foreground instance. Go to the Properties panel and select Brightness from
the Color drop-down menu. Set the Brightness to -40% (Figure 4.7). You just applied
the aerial perspective principle. To create the illusion of depth, you altered the color of
the instances to suggest three-dimensional space.

Step 10: Name the instances
Now that you have established a three-dimensional environment, the next step is to
add movement. Motion will further enhance the illusion of depth. To do this, you are
going to create a function in ActionScript that will change the position property for
each instance. First, however, you need to name each instance. Select the background
instance. Go to the Properties panel and enter backwater_mc in the instance name box
(Figure 4.8).
