river scientists will have to put monetary values
on a range of ecosystem components, because
increasingly the case for river conservation will
involve demonstrating the economic benefits of
services provided by healthy ecosystems (Everard,
this volume). For some, this transition from a
purely scientific to a socio-economic rationale may
prove to be uncomfortable.
