are special programs written by a person or team of indi-
viduals outside a particular company to work with specific operating systems or software
developed by that company.
In terms of Tumblr, a third-party developer would be any person or party outside of
Tumblr developing an app specifically for Tumblr's open-source
application programming
interface
(API). Apps typically enhance existing software in some way by adding new fea-
tures or integrating the existing service with another service, such as linking Tumblr to
Facebook and Twitter. Apps come in several forms such as plug-ins, add-ons, extensions,
standalone programs, or even hacks that you use to modify existing features and per-
formance.
