Once the architect was provided with the approximate geometrical details,
heprovided some preliminary drawings tothe engineers. Prior tothe design
charrette, the appliance, lighting, and plug loads were estimated using a
bottom-up approach, whereby energy consumption of each appliance and
other electricity-consuming item was predicted.
Atwo-daydesigncharrette washeldtostartthedetaileddesignofÉcoTerra.
It involved about 10 experts, including the lead engineer and architect,
graduate students, the builder, a representative from the local municipality,
and several technology experts. From the charrette, several key features of
the design were identified, including
