In the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry, there is
a growing research trend for automated optimization approaches to be used
to map out and find pathways to building designs with desirable qualities,
such as aesthetics, geometry, structure, comfort, energy conservation, or
economic features, rather than focusing on one particular outcome.
Although optimization studies are most commonly performed in the early
design stage, where the majority of design decisions are made, optimization
approaches can be equally useful in the late design and operation stages.
Forexample,optimizationcanbeusedforselectingandfine-tuningheating,
ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) control strategies, including
model predictive control.
