In-Depth Information
The LAST MINUTE sub-module
Selection: During the bulk of 'LAST MINUTE', the subject was expected
to pack a suitcase for a two-week holiday trip by choosing items from
an online catalogue with twelve different categories, presented in a
fixed order. In a simplified view, we thus had an iterative structure
made up from twelve repetitions of structurally similar sub-dialogs
of selections from a single category. For each category the available
options were given as menu on the subject's screen.
Normal packing sub-dialog: In a normal packing sub-dialog, we
essentially had a series of adjacent pairs made up of a user request
for a number of items (more precisely, a user request for a number of
instances from an item type) from the current selection menu (e.g. 'ten
t-shirts') followed by a confirmation by the system (e.g. 'ten t-shirts
have been added').
Barriers: The normal course of a sequence of repetitive sub-dialogs
with choices from a total of twelve categories was modified for all
subjects at specific time-points. These modifications or barriers were:
Firstly, after the sixth category, the current contents of the suitcase were
listed verbally (listing barrier), secondly, during the eighth category,
the system for the first time refused to pack selected items because the
airline's weight limit had been reached for the suitcase (weight limit
barrier), thirdly, at the end of the tenth category, the system informed
the user that there would now be more detailed information available
about the target location Waiuku (Waiuku barrier).
Additional barriers could occur depending on the course of the dialog.
These are typically caused by user errors or limitations of the system
or a combination of both.
Intervention: After the Waiuku barrier, a randomly selected subset
of half of the subjects received an empathic intervention that was
designed according to psychotherapy principles (Elliot et al., 2011).
The intervention created room for reflection and allowed subjects to
verbalize any emotions they may have experienced.
4.2 Aspects of the experiments
Involvement
Our subjects were highly engaged during the experiments and all the
subjects completed the WoZ sessions of approx. 30 minutes each. The
subjects were involved in solving the planning task and experienced
the need for a strategy change after the information about the weather
