TECHNOLOGICAL: The integration of cognitive theories, knowledge
representation models and algorithms in a computational framework will
enable rich models of human-machine interaction, and the development
of novel machine learning techniques for the analysis of socially
situated multimodal streams in human communication. The successful
analysis, modeling, and understanding of context effects and social
interactions will be of high relevance for Information Communication
Technology (ICT) applications and crucial for implementing Behaving
Human Computer Interactive systems that will be of public utility and
profi table for a living technology that simplifi es user access to future,
remote and nearby social services encompassing language barriers and
cultural specifi city.
SOCIETAL: The implementation of Behaving Human Computer
Interactive systems will produce applications such as: context-aware
avatars replacing humans in high risk tasks, companion agents for elderly
and impaired people, socially believable robots interacting with humans
in extreme, stressful time-critical conditions like urban emergency, future
smart environments, ambient assistive living technologies, computational
intelligence in games/storytelling, embodied conversational avatars, and
automatic healthcare and education services. Such applications will
enhance quality of life in society and will change the individuals' social
conduct, in typical as well as impaired circumstances.
To tackle this goal, research expertise in different yet complementary
scientific fields and cultural-linguistic specificity must be accounted
for, requiring a holistic scientific approach, cross-cultural collaborations
and exchanges that should lead to the realization of the following
objectives:
1. The implementation of neuropsychological, linguistic, and
behavioral analyses of social signals exhibited in spontaneous
dyadic/group interactions, taking into account different
scenarios and the underlying perceptual, cognitive and emotional
processes, to identify encoding features for annotation standards
and common scientific frameworks;
2. The development of cognitive theories and mathematical models
on how context influences interaction with the goal of better
predicting and understanding the users' (individual and group)
actions/reactions;
3. The delivery of algorithms and ICT applications for real-time
cross-modal processing and fusion of multiple social signals in
