Semantic Web Service Usage Tasks in WSMO
In this chapter, we exemplify some of the tasks that arise in the use of a
generic Semantic Web service framework. Given the complexity of the matter
and the state of the research, we shall not go into the deep details of realization
but rather aim to give the reader a general idea of how the semantics can be
usefully applied to several tasks. For the reader interested in concrete code
examples, we refer to the appropriate deliverables of the respective working
groups within the text.
We start this chapter by introducing a generic use case that is referred to
throughout the rest of the chapter. The list of tasks covered in this chapter
is not exhaustive but is intended to represent the most prominent areas in
current research.
9.1 The Virtual Travel Agency Scenario
The following depicts the Virtual Travel Agency (VTA) scenario which we
shall refer to to illustrate semantically enabled Web service technologies
throughout this chapter. This use case scenario is frequently applied for
demonstrating and illustrating the functionality of Web services (e.g. [61],[124]).
9.1.1 Overview of VTA Scenario
The Virtual Travel Agency is an e-tourism service provider which offers travel-
booking services to the end user by using and interacting with other, more
basic e-tourism service providers. The functionality of the VTA is that of a
traditional travel agency: getting a request from a customer, dealing with var-
ious e-tourism providers to put together an appropriate offer covering the cus-
tomer's request, arranging all the bookings (and payments) with the providers,
and transparently offering the final trip arrangement to the customer.
In principle, the VTA is a Web service that offers information and booking
facilities for several aspects related to traveling, for example booking tickets
