After 1797, Christianity revived when Christians began to move to the Goto
Islands from the Sotome Region. Because of the strict repression of Christianity by
the Ohmura Clan and a request from the Goto Clan, which was struggling with a
declining population, Christians from the Sotome Region began to compete with
one another to move to the Goto islands. Up to 3,000 Christians may have emigrated
to Goto, but they were forced to live in dispersed locations in the mountains without
