The consequence of this historical approach is that you, the reader, will not enjoy a
smooth passage. You will find yourself flipping from atmospheric physics to human health
and POPs to international control actions to the environmental chemistry of mercury to en-
vironmental toxicology and back to atmospheric and oceanographic physics - all within a
few pages. It will be a rocky ride, but along the way, I think you will experience some of
the emotions and disappointments of those of us who took this journey.
