Real and/or potential sources of radioactive contamination in the Arctic are associ-
ated with the high density of temporarily stored nuclear waste in Arctic and sub-
Arctic Russia. Hidden beneath this observation lies a disturbing reality: Very few
countries have developed and implemented plans for the permanent disposal of
their nuclear wastes. In the long term, this may represent the greatest safety chal-
lenge for the nuclear industry.
