Plate 77 Calpionellids
Calpionellids are very small bell-shaped, amphora-like or cylindrical microfossils restricted to Late Jurassic to
lower Early Cretaceous pelagic limestones. The plate displays longitudinal sections of taxa used in the standard
biochronology of the Jurassic-Cretaceous time interval (see Fig. 10.32).
1 Chitinoidella boneti Doben. The test has a microgranular calcitic wall and appears dark in transmitted light due to an
ultrastructure that differs from almost all other calpionellids (collected in the family Calpionellidae). Middle Tithonian:
Pontaux (Drôme), France.
2 Crassicollaria intermedia (Durand-Delga). Arrows point to the diagnostic criteria of the genus (thickening at the base of
the collar caused by oral ring). Late Tithonian, interval A2: Serres-Montclus, France.
3 Crassicollaria brevis (Remane). Late Tithonian, interval A3: Same locality as -> 1.
4 Crassicolaria parvula Remane. Early Berriasian, interval B: Chevallon, France.
5 Praetintinnopsella andrusovi Borza. Tithonian ( Chitinoidella zone): Pointaix (Isère), France.
6 Calpionella alpina Lorenz. Black arrows point to the short and erect collar characteristic of Calpionella . White arrow
indicates the bell-shaped aboral part of the test. Lowermost Berriasian, lower part of interval B: Saint-Penteraix, France.
7 Calpionella alpina Lorenz. Large specimen, characteristic of time interval A2/A3. Late Tithonian, interval A2: Same
locality as -> 2.
8 Calpionella elliptica Cadisch. Berriasian, interval C: Same locality as -> 2.
9 Remaniella ferasini (Catalano). Early Middle Berriasian, Calpionella zone, interval B: Ra Stua section, Belluno, Italy.

15 Calpionellopsis simplex (Colom). The arrow points to the simple ringlike collar surrounding the oral opening. Late
Berriasian, Calpionellopsis zone, interval D: Majorca, Spain.

17 Sturiella dolomitica Grün and Blau. Late Berriasian, interval D1, Calpionellopsis zone, simplex subzone: Locality as -> 9.

19 Borzaites atavus (Grün and Blau). The arrow points to the ringlike collar. Holotype. Late Berriasian. Calpionellopsis

20 Praecalpionellites hillebrandti Grün and Blau. Praecalpionellites is characterized by a two-fold collar with both ele-
ments separated from the lorica (arrow). Late Berriasian. Calpionellopsis zone, oblonga subzone, interval D3. Same locality

21 Cone-in-cone stacking: Outer form is Praecalpionellites murgeanui (Pop), smaller inner form is ? Lorenziella sp. Late

23 Praecalpionellites filipescui (Pop). The nannomicrite consists of disintegrated elements of Nannoconus (inset bottom
right). Nannoconid assemblages are used to establish biozones. Late Berriasian. Calpionellopsis zone, oblonga subzone,

24 Praecalpionellites dadayi (Knauer). Late Berriasian. Calpionellopsis zone, oblonga subzone, interval D3: Locality as -> 9.
25 Calpionellites darderi (Colom). The arrow points to a diagnostic feature of Calpionellites , the arrangement of parts of the
collar parallel to the lateral walls. Early Valanginian, Calpionellites zone, interval E: Fanes area, Italy.
