found at slightly greater depths. Planktonic foramin-
ifera avoid terrigenous input. Their shells, therefore,
accumulate in the bathyal depths of open-marine ba-
sins.
Taxonomic determination of foraminifera in thin
sections of limestones may be difficult because only
randomly oriented sections are commonly available,
and wall structures are often obliterated by diagenesis.
Some of these problems can be overcome by the
following steps:
Foraminifera in thin sections
Relevant criteria for the taxonomic discrimination
of foraminifera in thin sections are wall structure, ar-
rangement of chambers and the form and position of
the apertura (Arnaud-Vanneau 1980). Foraminifera
should be studied in plane and polarized light.
Compare foraminifera dissolved from limestones by
acids with those found in thin sections of the lime-
stone (see Pl. 9/1, 2);
compare hypothetical figures of geometrically dif-

useful for determining foraminifera and that assist in interpreting depositional environments of limestones with fora-
minifers.
