4.1.5 Practical Aids in Describing
and Interpreting Fine-Grained Limestones
How do we describe fine-grained carbonate rocks?
Box 4.3 and Box 4.4 summarize the main questions
which should be answered in a thorough description of
micritic limestones. The answers are necessary for tack-
ling the difficult question: 'What do you think about
the origin of these micrites?' (see Fig. 4.6).
How do we interpret fine-grained carbonates?
The genetic interpretation of micrites is difficult but
can however, be facilitated by a combined use of mi-
croscopic, submicroscopic and geochemical criteria.
Fig. 4.6 summarizes some key criteria, but it must be
emphasized that, particularly in shallow-marine and
also in non-marine environments, several genetic modes
work together, as exemplified by the calcareous mud
budget of the Bight of Abaco, Bahamas. This example
as well as many others demonstrate the central impor-
tance of mud import and mud export from shallow-
water settings to deep-water settings. Export from shal-
low platform areas to deep shelf settings was a com-
mon process during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic (e.g.
Pittet et al. 2000).
4.1.6 Significance of Fine-Grained
Carbonates
Micritic carbonates offer a wealth of information on
the controls of the origin and physicochemical proper-
ties of fine-grained limestones. Box 4.5 lists some of
these points. Further explanations are provided in the
chapters indicated in the Box.
