Outdoor Activities
Although small (and very flat), Denmark has great diversity for activities,
from island-hopping cycling adventures to Lake District canoeing. The sea,
never far away, offers fishing, sailing, windsurfing and beachgoing, while
the national parks and hiking trails offer walkers a chance to stretch their
legs. And everywhere, the cycling opportunities are outstanding.
Best of the Outdoors
Best Time to Go
June to August. Having been cooped up for most of the winter, Denmark comes alive in
summer, shaking off winter's grey blanket to catch a Scandi tan. May and September
can also be good, weatherwise.
Best Cycling
For long-distance pedalling, any of the 11 national cycling routes is a fine choice. Leis-
urely island cycling is outstanding on Bornholm or Ærø. Looking to catch some air? For-
ested Rold Skov has good mountain-biking tracks.
Best Walking
Scenic short walks take in the white cliffs of Møns Klint, or the bucolic Lake District. For
a longer ramble, the Hærvej Route covers Jutland's spine, while Øhavssti incorporates
the South Funen Archipelago.
Best on the Water
Sailors flock to Svendborg - from here there's an archipelago to explore. Canoeists will
love the lakes and rivers of the Lake District (regional hub: Silkeborg). Wind-powered
watersports are big on the west coast - try Hvide Sande or Klitmøller.
