In-Depth Information
INSURANCE
If you're an EU citizen, the European Health Insurance Card covers you for most medical
care but not for nonemergencies or for emergency repatriation to home. Apply online via
your government's health department website.
Citizens from other countries should find out if there is a reciprocal arrangement for free
medical access in Denmark. Make sure your health insurance covers you for the worst
possible scenario, such as an accident requiring an emergency flight home.
Insurance
Although Denmark is a very safe place to travel, theft does occasionally happen, and ill-
ness and accidents are always a possibility. A travel insurance policy to cover theft, loss
and medical problems is strongly recommended.
Internet Access
With the proliferation of wi-fi, and most locals and travellers carrying iPads and/or smart-
phones, the old-fashioned internet cafe is a dying breed in Denmark. There may be a
couple catering to gamers and to laptop-less travellers in the major cities, but public lib-
raries are your best bet in midsized and small towns for free use of computers with inter-
net access.
Libraries also have free wi-fi (you will need a code), as do many cafes, bars, and even
trains and buses. Wi-fi is common in hotels and hostels (indicated in listings using the wi-
fi icon) and is usually free. Some hostels and hotels will offer a computer for guests to
use, free or for a small charge (indicated in our reviews with the @ symbol).
Legal Matters
Authorities are strict about drink driving, and even a couple of drinks can put you over the
legal limit of 0.05% blood-alcohol level. Drivers detected under the influence of alcohol
are liable to receive stiff penalties and a possible prison sentence.
Always treat drugs with a great deal of caution. In Denmark all forms of cannabis are offi-
cially illegal.
