In-Depth Information
Despite these admirable statistics, sexism has not been fully relegated to the history
books. One high-profile Dane all too aware of this is prime minister Helle Thorning-Sch-
midt, whose well-documented love of designer labels has earned her the nickname 'Gucci
Helle' in the media and by some of her political opponents. While Thorning-Schmidt's de-
tractors argue that her passion for expensive fashion undermines the core principles of her
party - the Social Democrats - others point to the fact that her male counterparts never
face the same scrutiny when it comes to their appearance.
Such seeming double standards are not restricted to the wardrobe either. Speaking to
Adam Price (creator of the TV political drama Borgen ) in 2009, Thorning-Schmidt re-
ferred to a media interview with then-prime minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen. In it, the
leader stated that it was satisfactory to see his family only once or twice a week as they un-
derstood the challenges of his job. Musing on the comment, Thorning-Schmidt remarked
that a female politician could never make the same statement for fear of being judged as a
bad wife and mother willing to sacrifice everything. Even in progressive Denmark, deep-
rooted prejudices can be hard to erase.
