1943
In a hastily planned operation, the Danish resistance successfully smuggles some 7200 Jews into
Sweden after hearing of Nazi plans to round them up and transport them to its European concen-
tration camps.
1953
The Danish constitution is amended to allow a female monarch, paving the way for Margrethe II to
become queen, Denmark's first female monarch since the 14th century.
1973
Denmark joins the European Community (now the European Union).
1989
Denmark passes a bill legalising registered partnerships, becoming the world's first country to
legally recognise same-sex unions.

Reaching the limits of their tolerance for the extent of the European project, Denmark votes
against adopting the new European currency, the euro.

The Øresundsbron (Øresund Bridge) and adjoining Drogden tunnel are officially opened, provid-
ing a direct road and rail link between Denmark and Sweden. The project becomes the longest
combined road and rail bridge in Europe.
