In-Depth Information
If all you have is a day, recommended options are the 24km round-trip across the lakes
east to Himmelbjerget (a harder, more exposed route), or a gentler option travelling with
the currents north from Silkeborg to Kongensbro (and taking the bus back to town). Make
enquiries with Silkeborg Kanocenter ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 86 80 30 03;
www.silkeborgkanocenter.dk ; Østergade 36; 9am-8pm Jun-Aug, to 5pm Apr, May, Sep; ) . You
can also hire motorboats here (per hour/day Dkr200/900) if the exertion of canoeing
doesn't appeal.
Silkeborg Kanocenter has a range of tour options, too (adaptable from two to five days):
a Family Tour takes you along a route staying in camping grounds where your tent is pre-
erected for you. A Pioneer Tour is a more challenging option, sleeping at primitive tent
sites along the way. If you're a softie who prefers a real bed, a Luxury Tour has accom-
modation and meals arranged at atmospheric old lakeside inns.
Silkeborg Kanocenter also has one-person kayaks for hire (Dkr275 per day), while
Silkeborg Kayak og Cykel Udlejning , at the northern end of Indelukket park, has family
kayaks available for multiday rental, plus motor dinghies, mountain bikes and lots of good
ideas for combining cycling and kayaking in a day tour.
Hiking & Cycling
The tourist office has plenty of brochures on hiking and cycling routes - a worthwhile pur-
chase is either 12 Beautiful Bicycle Tours or 12 Lovely Walks in the Lakelands (Dkr40
each). Silkeborg Kayak og Cykel Udlejning ( www.skcu.dk ; Åhave Allé 7; kayak/mountain
bike per day Dkr350/175; 9am-8pm Jun-Aug, to 5pm May, by arrangement Sep, Oct, Apr; ) has
mountain bikes for hire; for a taster, they suggest taking a bike on the boat to Himmelbjer-
get and cycling back (15km).
The beech forest of Nordskoven is crisscrossed with hiking and bike trails. To reach
Nordskoven head south down Åhavevej from the tourist office, then go left over the old
railway bridge near the hostel.
The track of the old railway from Silkeborg to Horsens is now an excellent walking and
cycling trail of about 50km or so.
The Hærvej ( www.haervej.com ) , the Old Military Road, passes through the region (west
of Silkeborg). This is a 250km historic route from the German border north to Viborg
along the backbone of Denmark; it's been converted into a cycling, hiking and horse-rid-
ing trail.
