Boat Trips
Hjejlen Boat Company
BOAT TRIPS
The
Hjejlen,
the world's oldest operating paddle steamer, has been plying the waters of the
Lake District since it was first launched in 1861. These days the boat shuttles tourists from
Silkeborg to the foot of Himmelbjerget during the summer season (10am and 2pm daily,
July to mid-August). The operators also have other boats plying the route during this peri-
od, and from May to September.
The route takes in a wealth of river and lake scenery and is one of the most popular out-
ings in the Lake District. Boats also stop at Indelukket park and Aqua aquarium.
Canoeing & Kayaking
In the warmer months (May to September), self-guided canoe tours are popular. These take
you through some magnificent countryside, and options range from a couple of hours to a
couple of days.
You can plan your own tour and consult the various canoe hirers for the finer details -
they are a wealth of information and will rent canoes by the hour (Dkr100) or day
(Dkr400) and help with transport of gear to the chosen departure point, if necessary. If you
don't have your own camping gear, you should also enquire about tent rental (usually pos-
sible if arranged a few days in advance). You can expect an average, leisurely day of ca-
noeing to cover about 15km to 20km.
