In operation since 1664, this charming inn on the Nordby waterfront has cosy antique-
filled rooms (plus more modern ones in a newer annex) and an intimate atmosphere, plus a
large, sunny terrace and an appealing menu of local specialities (lunch Dkr79 to Dkr139,
dinner mains Dkr129 to Dkr239).

The loveliest place to stay on the island (and renowned around the country) is this
thatched-roof slice of hyggelig heaven. It dates from 1722, and its 14 individually decor-
ated rooms feature local antiques. The inn has an acclaimed gourmet restaurant (lunch
Dkr129 to Dkr179, dinner three/five courses Dk495/695), which showcases local and sea-
sonal specialities in a steeped-in-time dining room.
Eating
As well as the inns serving food, take a stroll along Nordby's Hovedgaden and Sønderho's
Sønderland and you'll be tripping over inviting little eateries and sunny courtyard gardens.
There are supermarkets and bakeries in the main villages on the island. Heather honey is
a local speciality, as is lamb, and it's worth seeking out beer brewed at the local micro-
brewery, Fanø Bryghus.
Slagter Christiansen DELI

The Nordby butcher, Slagter Christiansen, is known throughout Denmark for his Fanø
skinke (Fanø ham), a ham in the style of Italian parma. The store is a delicatessen full of
local gourmet produce.
