Musikhuset Esbjerg
ARCHITECTURE
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; www.mhe.dk ; Havnegade 18)
Famed Danish architect Jørn Utzon (he of the Sydney Opera House) designed Esbjerg's
Music House together with his son, Jan. The performing arts centre opened in 1997 and is
the city's main venue for cultural events including concerts, opera and ballet.
Esbjerg Kunstmuseum
MUSEUM
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; www.eskum.dk ; Havnegade 20; adult/child Dkr60/free; 10am-4pm)
The Utzon-designed Musikhuset is home to the modern-art collection of Esbjerg Kunstmu-
seum. In an admirable display of openness (and a nod to restricted space), the Åbne Ma-
gasiner (Open Stores) downstairs allows you to look up undisplayed works from the col-
lection. Another benefit: from the museum it's easy to admire the angles and details of the
Utzons' architectural prowess.

Esbjerg self-consciously attempted to manufacture a medieval appearance in 1897 when
the town architect built the water tower now conveniently (for tourists) located next door
