Søby
Pop 540
The shipyard, fishing fleet and marina dominate the small village of Søby, but it lacks the
tourist charm of either Ærøskøbing or Marstal. There are some excellent B&Bs in the
countryside between here and Ærøskøbing.
Skjoldnæs Fyr
LIGHTHOUSE
(adult/child Dkr20/10)
An excellent destination for a drive or cycle, Skjoldnæs Fyr is a 19th-century, granite-
block lighthouse 5km northwest of Søby, next to the small clubhouse for the scenic golf
course. You can climb the narrow stairway (it's rarely locked during the day) for exhilarat-
ing views of wind-tossed swallows and the sea. A few minutes' walk beyond the light-
house is a pebble beach and bird breeding area.
Søbygaard MANOR
( www.arremus.dk ; Søbygaardsvej; adult/child Dkr50/free;
10am-4pm daily mid-Apr-mid-Oct, to
5pm Jul & Aug, by appointment rest of yr)
The earthen ramparts of Søby Volde, once part of a 12th-century fortress, hunch to one
side of the main road, 3km south of Søby. Across the lane is 16th-century Søbygaard, a
compact manor house with a dry moat, reputedly haunted by a white lady. It stages art ex-
hibitions, and musical events in summer.
