10am-5pm mid-May-Sep, until
9pm Thu)
'MadMarked' sounds worrying but in fact means 'food market', and this bright, pretty cafe-
deli at the entrance to the Skovsgaard estate is brimming with fresh, organic local produce
(some of it grown on the estate). You can lunch on a plate of various meats and salads;
we'll understand if you go straight for coffee and dessert (eg rhubarb crumble).
Stock up on gourmet picnic supplies, or drop by on Thursday nights for a simple, low-
cost buffet dinner (from 5.30pm; Dkr98).
ÆRØ
Just 30km long and 9km wide, Ærø (pronounced 'with difficulty' - or air-rue ) is the fron-
trunner for the title of loveliest Danish island.
The island is rich in maritime history, and home to some good beaches and photogenic
bathing huts. Add the picturebook town of Ærøskøbing and the country roads that roll
through gentle countryside peppered with thatched-roofed, half-timbered houses and old
windmills, and you'll really capture the feeling of stepping back in time.
It helps that Ærø is populated by some of the friendliest people in Denmark: in a gesture
of kindness, the local bus is free. Still, the three main towns (Ærøskøbing, Marstal and
Søby) are within perfect cycling distance of each other, and cycling is a great way to get
around - not least as this is in keeping with the spirit of an island that is run almost en-
tirely on sustainable energy sources such and wind and solar power.
In summer the place comes alive. There is a lively jazz festival ( www.aeroejazzfestival.dk )
in late July/early August, and it's a favourite yachtie destination. It's also developing a
reputation as the wedding capital of Denmark: Vegas it ain't (it's a whole lot more sedate),
