Troense
VILLAGE
Troense is a well-to-do seaside village with a small yachting harbour and quaint thatched
houses: two particularly pretty streets are Grønnegade and Badstuen.
Valdemars Slot CASTLE
( www.valdemarsslot.dk ; Slotsalléen 100, Troense; adult/child Dkr85/45;
10am-5pm daily Jun-Aug,
closed Mon May & Sep)
One of Christian IV's lavish palaces, Valdemars Slot was built for his son Valdemar Chris-
tian in 1644. Valdemar never actually lived here - he died on a Polish battlefield at age 34
- and the castle itself was badly damaged in the Danish-Swedish wars. It was gifted to the
naval hero Niels Juel, who transformed it into the baroque mansion you see today.
The palatial interior is crammed with antique furniture and eccentricities - lavish Vene-
tian glass, 17th-century Gobelin tapestries, a toilet hidden in a window frame, a secret
ammo store, Niels Juels' sea chest pasted with engravings, and autographed photos of vis-
iting celebs. In the attic is the grisly Jagt- & Trofæmuseet , featuring ethnographical ob-
jects and animal trophies collected by hunter Børge Hinsch and others.
Another museum can be found in the pond-filled courtyard: Danmarks Museum for
Lystsejlads (Yachting Museum; www.lystsejlads.dk ; adult/child incl castle Dkr99/55;
10am-5pm
Jun-Aug) contains a collection of sleek, varnish sailboats.
There's no admission charge to the grounds of the castle or the sandy beach, just outside
the southern gate. There is mini golf here, plus a casual cafe, and in the castle's vaulted
cellars, a smart lunchtime restaurant (lunch Dkr95-185; 11.30am-4pm Tue-Sun Apr-Nov) .
You can get to Valdemars Slot by bus (route 250 stops 1km short), but a better way is
via M/S Helge , a boat that ferries passengers from Svendborg.
Bregninge
VILLAGE
The small village of Bregninge, on Rte 9, is home to one of Denmark's most-visited
churches, the medieval Bregninge Kirke . Its attraction lies in the panoramic views from
the tower .
Tåsinge Museum ( www.taasinge-museum.dk ; Kirkebakken 1; adult/child 40kr/free;
10am-4pm Tue-Sun Jun-Aug) , across the road from the church, is a local-history museum
telling the story of Lieutenant Sixten Sparre and artist Elvira Madigan, Denmark's real-life
